The announcement was made on Tuesday at the IIT Madras Innovation Park, marking a major step in the country’s indigenous robotics capabilities. This collaboration brings together academic research expertise with commercial scalability, aiming to reduce reliance on imported automation hardware.
Technical Specifications and R&D Focus
The HR-200 is designed specifically for industrial automation tasks within the Indian manufacturing ecosystem. Unlike previous models that focused on consumer interaction, this prototype prioritizes durability and load-bearing capacity. The research team utilized proprietary actuator technology developed over three years at the IIT Robotics Laboratory. The unit features a 12-degree-of-freedom upper body and a reinforced lower limb structure capable of carrying up to 50 kilograms.
At the core of the robot’s operation is a custom deep reinforcement learning algorithm. This AI stack allows the robot to navigate uneven terrain common in Indian factory floors, adapting to obstacles in real-time. The R&D team, led by Dr. Aravind Kumar, emphasized that the software stack is fully open-source, encouraging further academic contributions and customization by local engineers.
India Market Pricing and Accessibility
A key differentiator for the HR-200 is its pricing strategy. The consortium aims to price the unit at approximately ₹15 lakhs ($18,000 USD), making it significantly more affordable than Western counterparts which often exceed ₹1 crore. This pricing model is intended to make automation accessible to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) across states like Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. By sourcing components locally, the team claims to have reduced the bill of materials by 40% compared to international competitors.
Future Roadmap and Production
The team plans to begin pilot testing in select automotive assembly lines by the end of the fiscal year. RoboIndus CEO, speaking at the event, emphasized that the goal is to scale production to 100 units by 2025. The collaboration includes ongoing research into energy efficiency, aiming to reduce battery dependency through regenerative braking systems. As the technology matures, the consortium plans to expand the HR series to include upper-body only variants for logistics, further diversifying the application scope.
