Strategic Collaboration Targets Domestic R&D

Bengaluru, India - The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has officially partnered with Bharat Robotics Labs to launch the 'Nexus' humanoid research kit. The collaboration, announced today, focuses on developing a semi-autonomous humanoid platform tailored specifically for academic and industrial research within India. This move marks a significant shift towards reducing dependency on imported hardware and cutting-edge foreign software stacks.

The Nexus kit features a dual-arm manipulation system and a bipedal locomotion chassis capable of navigating uneven terrains typical of Indian manufacturing floors. Developed over the past 18 months, the system utilizes open-source kinematic libraries to allow researchers to customize control algorithms without expensive licensing fees. Key specifications include a payload capacity of 15 kilograms and a battery life extending up to four hours of continuous operation.

Significantly, the Nexus kit is priced at ₹18.5 lakhs ($22,000), a fraction of the cost of international counterparts which often exceed $100,000. This pricing strategy addresses the critical barrier of import duties and high capital expenditure for Indian universities. By localizing the supply chain for actuators and sensors, the project aims to support the growing ecosystem of robotics startups across the country.

"We aim to make human-level robotics accessible to Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities," said Dr. A.K. Sharma, Lead Researcher at IIT Madras. "By localizing the supply chain for actuators and sensors, we can support the growing ecosystem of robotics startups."

The launch includes a comprehensive training module for Indian engineers, funded by the Department of Science and Technology. The first batch of 50 units will be deployed across IITs and research institutes in Pune, Chennai, and Hyderabad. Each unit comes with remote diagnostic support to ensure minimal downtime for research teams.

Industry analysts view this as a strategic move to establish India as a hub for humanoid robotics R&D rather than just an assembly ground for foreign giants. The project also aligns with the National Robotics Mission's goal of increasing domestic manufacturing capacity and creating high-tech jobs.

Bharat Robotics plans to release a cloud-based simulation environment by early next year. This will allow researchers to test code on the Nexus kit remotely before physical deployment, significantly speeding up the development cycle. With the global humanoid robot market expected to grow rapidly, the Nexus platform positions India to contribute significantly to the global research community.

The partnership is expected to scale production by Q3 2025, with plans to introduce a lighter, cost-effective version for educational purposes. This initiative underscores India's ambition to become a net exporter of advanced robotics technology in the coming decade.
