Stree Robotics Unveils Affordable Humanoid Prototype at India AI Summit
New Delhi-based humanoid robotics firm Stree Robotics unveiled its latest prototype, the ST-Alpha, during the India AI Summit 2024 in New Delhi on Tuesday. The event, organized by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, highlighted the growing interest in domestic automation solutions. The ST-Alpha is designed to assist in logistics and light manufacturing tasks, featuring a payload capacity of 20 kilograms and a battery life of up to eight hours.
Stree Robotics CEO, Rajiv Singh, stated that the company aims to reduce the cost of humanoid automation in India by 40 percent compared to imported alternatives. The robot is equipped with advanced AI-driven navigation and object recognition systems developed entirely by the Indian engineering team. This development aligns with the government's 'Make in India' initiative, which encourages local manufacturing of high-tech hardware.
Pricing for the ST-Alpha is expected to start around 45 lakh rupees for the pilot unit, making it more accessible for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The company plans to begin production in Gurugram by the third quarter of 2024. Partnerships with three major automotive manufacturers in Tamil Nadu have already been signed to integrate the robots into assembly lines.
Industry experts suggest this move could transform the Indian manufacturing landscape. The rise of affordable humanoid robots addresses the growing labor shortage in the sector. Stree Robotics also announced a collaboration with IIT Delhi to further refine the AI algorithms for local language understanding and regional safety standards.
The broader context of the India AI Summit showcased over 50 robotics startups. The government has pledged subsidies to support such ventures under the National AI Mission. This funding aims to create 50,000 high-skilled jobs in the robotics sector over the next five years. Stree Robotics remains one of the key beneficiaries of this policy framework.
The ST-Alpha features 12 degrees of freedom, allowing for complex movements in unstructured environments. It includes thermal sensors to operate in Indian climate conditions ranging from extreme heat to monsoon humidity. The company plans to offer a subscription model for AI updates, ensuring the robots remain up-to-date with the latest safety protocols. Future roadmap includes a version capable of handling hazardous materials, expanding the scope beyond light assembly.
