BharatBots Raises $32 Million to Accelerate Humanoid Robot Manufacturing

Bengaluru-based humanoid robotics startup BharatBots announced the closure of a $32 million Series A funding round on Tuesday, October 24, 2024. The round was led by Sequoia India, with participation from existing investors Accel and Tiger Global. The capital will be deployed to scale production of its HR-1 humanoid robot and establish a dedicated AI training center in Chennai by the third quarter of 2024. This marks the largest institutional investment directed exclusively at an Indian humanoid robotics venture to date.

Localized AI and Manufacturing Focus

The HR-1 robot, priced at ₹18 lakh for early enterprise adopters, is engineered specifically for India’s automotive and electronics assembly lines. Unlike imported alternatives that typically cost upwards of ₹4.5 crore, the HR-1 leverages domestically sourced actuators and a proprietary neural processing unit optimized for low-latency task execution. The startup plans to deliver its first batch of fifty units to a major Gujarat-based automotive manufacturer by December 2024. Engineering teams have integrated a modular end-effector system that allows rapid reconfiguration for welding, inspection, and material handling tasks.

Industry Expansion and Strategic Partnerships

Alongside the funding announcement, BharatBots signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government to establish an assembly facility in Sriperumbudur. The facility will produce 5,000 units annually by 2026, targeting cost reductions of 40 percent through localized supply chains. The company also partnered with IIT Madras to develop a simulation environment tailored for Indian industrial workflows, reducing deployment time from six months to six weeks. This collaboration will focus on training foundation models using regional manufacturing data sets.

Market Outlook and Deployment Timeline

Humanoid robotics in India is projected to reach a $1.2 billion market size by 2027, driven by persistent labor shortages in precision manufacturing and government incentives under the Production Linked Incentive scheme. BharatBots intends to use the new capital to expand its commercial operations across Mumbai, Pune, and Hyderabad, while securing ISO safety certifications for overseas expansion. The startup currently employs 280 engineers and robotics specialists, with plans to double its workforce over the next twelve months to meet growing enterprise demand.
