Joint Facility Launches in Pune
IIT Bombay and Hyundai Motor Group officially inaugurated the Hyundai-IIT Bombay Humanoid Robotics Research Lab in Pune on October 12, 2024. The facility marks the first dedicated joint research center in India focused exclusively on scalable humanoid robot development. The lab will operate under a five-year collaboration agreement, pooling resources from both institutions to accelerate prototyping, control algorithm testing, and hardware validation for bipedal robotics.
Focus on Low-Cost Actuator Development
Researchers at the new facility will prioritize the design and manufacturing of high-torque, low-cost joint actuators, a critical bottleneck in global humanoid robot commercialization. The lab’s initial research track will utilize modified series elastic actuator architectures paired with custom magnetic gearboxes to reduce dependency on imported harmonic drives. Early bench tests conducted by the core engineering team demonstrate a 30 percent weight reduction and a 25 percent improvement in continuous torque output compared to existing commercial alternatives. The facility will also host dynamic locomotion trials on its 40-meter force-sensing runway, enabling real-time gait optimization for uneven terrain navigation.
Academic Access and Pricing
Beginning in the third quarter of 2025, the lab will open its hardware testing suites and simulation environments to accredited Indian universities and research institutes. To support broader academic adoption, the collaboration has introduced a modular research kit priced at ₹3.8 lakh ($4,550), which includes dual-arm manipulators, a reinforced lower chassis, and open-source firmware. The pricing structure is designed to remain competitive with European and North American equivalents while accounting for local manufacturing advantages. Applications for the academic access program will be accepted through the IIT Bombay research portal starting November 1, 2024. The facility will maintain a strict IP-sharing framework that grants participating institutions non-exclusive rights to co-developed control software and mechanical designs.
Computational Infrastructure and Simulation
The research lab will integrate a dedicated high-performance computing cluster optimized for physics-based simulation and reinforcement learning pipelines. Engineers will deploy custom Isaac Sim and MuJoCo environments tailored to the lab’s proprietary actuator models, allowing researchers to validate balance recovery algorithms and torque distribution strategies before physical deployment. The simulation suite will be accessible remotely to partner institutions, reducing the need for repeated hardware prototyping cycles. Data collected from both simulation and physical trials will be archived in a centralized repository, ensuring reproducibility across participating universities. The inaugural research cohort will consist of twelve doctoral candidates and six postdoctoral fellows specializing in robotics, control theory, and mechatronics.
