IIT Madras and IIT Bombay officially launched the Centre for Advanced Humanoid Robotics (CAHR) on June 12, 2024, marking a significant milestone in India’s autonomous systems research. The inauguration ceremony featured demonstrations of the lab’s first generation of modular exoskeleton frames and real-time gait simulation dashboards. Project leads from both institutions emphasized that the facility will operate as a shared infrastructure model, allowing startups and academic teams to access high-performance compute resources and machining workshops at subsidized rates. Backed by a ₹45 crore grant from the Department of Science and Technology alongside strategic investments from domestic industrial automation firms, the center brings together over sixty researchers specializing in biomechanics, machine learning, and power electronics.
Focus on Affordable Actuator Architecture
A core mandate of the new laboratory is the development of high-torque density joint modules that drastically reduce manufacturing costs. Traditional humanoid actuators often exceed $8,000 per unit, creating a major barrier to commercial deployment. The CAHR team is utilizing novel harmonic drive designs and domestically sourced rare-earth magnets to target a production cost of under ₹10 lakh (approximately $12,000) per joint assembly. Early prototypes have demonstrated a 40 percent improvement in energy efficiency compared to legacy systems, with mass production slated for Indian precision engineering partners by Q4 2025.
AI-Driven Locomotion and Real-World Testing
The research initiative integrates a 500-tensor simulation cluster with physical testing corridors to refine dynamic balance and terrain adaptation algorithms. Researchers are training reinforcement learning models on heterogeneous datasets that simulate Indian factory floors, warehouse racking systems, and healthcare environments. The lab will deploy two full-scale prototype units in partnership with Chennai-based automotive assembly lines and Mumbai logistics hubs for six-month operational trials. These pilots will collect critical data on durability, maintenance intervals, and human-robot collaboration safety metrics.
Open-Source Components and Global Collaboration
To accelerate industry adoption, the consortium has committed to releasing the firmware architecture and core mechanical blueprints under an open-source license after the initial development phase. The facility has also established research exchange agreements with leading robotics laboratories in Japan and Germany, focusing on standardizing safety protocols and modular interface specifications. By lowering the hardware entry barrier and aligning software development with domestic industrial needs, the CAHR aims to position India as a competitive hub in the global humanoid robotics supply chain.
