Major Humanoid Prototype Debuts at India Robotics & AI Expo 2024

New Delhi, India – The robotics landscape in India witnessed a significant milestone this week as Agni Robotics, a Bengaluru-based deep-tech startup, officially launched its first commercial-grade humanoid robot, the 'Vayu-1', at the India Robotics & AI Expo 2024. The event, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in collaboration with the Ministry of Heavy Industries, took place at the NSIC Exhibition Grounds in Okhla, drawing over 5,000 attendees from the manufacturing and technology sectors.

The Vayu-1 stands at 1.5 meters tall and is designed for light industrial tasks, including warehouse logistics and assembly line assistance. Unlike many imported competitors that cost upwards of ₹1 crore, Agni Robotics has priced the Vayu-1 at approximately ₹15 lakhs. This localization aims to make humanoid automation accessible to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across the country. The robot weighs 60 kilograms and is capable of carrying a payload of up to 20 kilograms on its back.

During the press conference at the Expo, Agni Robotics CEO Rahul Mehta highlighted the robot's dual-arm dexterity, which allows for precision handling of fragile components. The unit features a 12-hour battery life and utilizes a proprietary AI navigation system developed in-house. Mehta stated, "Our goal is to democratize robotics in India. By reducing the cost barrier, we are enabling local factories to adopt automation without compromising on quality." He further noted that the Vayu-1 can be programmed via a tablet interface, reducing the need for specialized coding knowledge.

The expo also featured a live demonstration where the Vayu-1 sorted electronic components and transported them across a simulated factory floor. Industry analysts suggest this pricing strategy could accelerate the adoption rate of humanoid robots in the Indian manufacturing hub by at least 40 percent over the next three years. Several major automotive suppliers attending the event have expressed interest in pilot programs to test the robot in high-volume production lines.

Industry Impact and Future Roadmap

With the launch taking place at a premier national event, Agni Robotics has secured commitments from three large-scale manufacturing partners for pilot deployments starting Q1 2025. The startup plans to establish a dedicated assembly line in Chennai to meet the anticipated demand. The event concluded with a panel discussion on the regulatory framework for humanoid robots in India, emphasizing the need for standard safety protocols. Experts from NITI Aayog attended the session to discuss potential policy support for robotics startups.

This development marks a shift from import dependency to domestic innovation in the high-end robotics sector. As the Indian government pushes for the Make in India initiative, the successful rollout of affordable humanoid bots at the Expo signals strong momentum for the sector. The Expo organizers also announced plans for a dedicated humanoid robotics exhibition next year, focusing on healthcare and elder care applications.

Investors at the event noted that the Vayu-1 launch positions India as a key player in the global humanoid robotics supply chain. The startup is currently in talks with international distributors to export the Vayu-1 to Southeast Asian markets where labor costs are rising.
