Government Backs Domestic Humanoid Innovation
Bengaluru-based robotics startups received a major boost this week as the Department of Science and Technology (DST) announced a dedicated funding category under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS). The initiative, unveiled at the India Robotics Expo 2024, allocates ₹500 crore over the next three years specifically for the development of humanoid robots tailored for Indian industrial and service sectors.
Focus on Cost-Effective Manufacturing
The primary objective of the new funding track is to address the high cost of importing humanoid robots from global giants like Tesla or Boston Dynamics. The scheme prioritizes startups that can achieve a localized cost reduction of at least 40%. This pricing strategy aims to make humanoid automation accessible to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) across India's manufacturing belt.
Industry experts suggest that this move aligns with the 'Make in India' initiative, ensuring that labor-intensive sectors such as logistics, warehousing, and manufacturing benefit from affordable automation without the burden of foreign exchange liabilities.
Market Impact and Pricing Strategy
Early prototypes funded under this initiative are expected to retail between ₹15 lakh to ₹25 lakh, significantly lower than the global average of over ₹1 crore. The funding will cover R&D, prototype validation, and initial pilot deployments in Tier-2 cities.
"This is a turning point for Indian robotics," said a senior official from the DST. "We are seeing a shift from purely hardware assembly to core AI and control system innovation."
Global Partnerships Expected
The announcement also outlines provisions for international collaborations, allowing Indian firms to partner with foreign technology providers while retaining IP rights domestically. This framework is designed to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) into the Indian robotics ecosystem.
RobotWale estimates that this funding could accelerate the launch of at least five commercial humanoid robots by late 2025, fundamentally changing the automation landscape in India.
