Bharat Robotics Unveils Cost-Effective Humanoid Robot in Bangalore
Bangalore-based deep-tech startup Bharat Robotics Labs officially unveiled its first indigenous humanoid robot, the BharatBot-1, on Wednesday during the India Robotics Summit 2024. The launch marks a significant milestone for the Indian robotics sector, aiming to reduce reliance on expensive foreign automation hardware while addressing the growing demand for skilled labor in manufacturing.
Speaking at the event, the team highlighted the strategic importance of the product for India's manufacturing ambitions. The robot represents the culmination of three years of research and development, backed by government grants and private funding.
Technical Specifications and Pricing Structure
The BharatBot-1 is engineered specifically for light industrial tasks, including assembly line assistance and logistics within warehouses. Priced at approximately ₹25 lakhs, the robot is positioned to compete with entry-level models from international giants like Tesla and Figure AI, which often cost significantly more when imported into the Indian market due to tariffs and logistics.
Key features include a hybrid control system allowing for both autonomous navigation and teleoperation. The robot stands 1.6 meters tall and weighs 45 kilograms. It runs on a proprietary AI stack optimized for Indian manufacturing environments, capable of handling diverse payloads up to 10 kilograms. The unit is equipped with LiDAR sensors and stereo cameras for real-time obstacle avoidance.
Industry Impact and Future Roadmap
CEO Rohan Mehta stated that the pricing strategy is crucial for adoption among Indian SMEs. "We aim to make automation accessible," Mehta said during the press conference held at the Bengaluru International Exhibition Centre. The company plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Heavy Industries to avail government subsidies under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for manufacturing automation.
Bharat Robotics Labs has already secured partnerships with three major automotive component manufacturers in Chennai and Pune. The initial batch of 50 units will be delivered by the end of the quarter. Future versions aim to incorporate advanced vision systems and multi-grip manipulation capabilities to handle complex assembly tasks.
Industry analysts suggest that the entry of a domestic humanoid player could lower overall costs for the Indian ecosystem by an estimated 20 percent over the next three years. The startup has raised ₹150 crores in Series A funding led by prominent Indian VC firms to support mass production.
The manufacturing unit is located in Hyderabad, ensuring full supply chain control. Components are sourced from a network of Indian vendors, aligning with the 'Make in India' initiative. The robot supports multiple Indian languages for voice commands, facilitating easier integration for local workforce operators.
