IIT Madras and DRDO Joint Lab Unveils Indigenous Humanoid Actuator Platform - RobotWale News
Joint Facility Launch Accelerates Domestic Humanoid Research
On October 24, 2024, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) officially inaugurated the Joint Humanoid Robotics Research Lab in Chennai. The facility marks the first dedicated academic-military partnership focused exclusively on bipedal locomotion, dexterous manipulation, and AI-driven control systems for next-generation humanoid platforms. Construction of the 4,500-square-meter research campus began in early 2023, with final commissioning completed ahead of schedule.
Indigenous Actuator Platform Reduces Component Costs
The lab simultaneously unveiled its first major hardware milestone: a family of high-torque, low-cost jointed actuators designed specifically for humanoid applications. Developed over 18 months by a cross-disciplinary team of robotics engineers and control theorists, the actuator series delivers 180 Nm of peak torque per joint at an estimated manufacturing cost of ₹12,000 per unit. This pricing represents a 60 percent reduction compared to imported alternatives currently used in Indian prototyping programs. The components utilize a novel harmonic drive architecture and custom-wound copper windings to minimize thermal degradation during continuous operation.
Research Focus and Industry Integration
Initial research at the facility will prioritize adaptive gait algorithms for uneven terrain, real-time balance recovery, and modular end-effector design for industrial and disaster-response deployments. The lab will host a rotating cohort of doctoral researchers and postdoctoral fellows from IIT Madras, IISc Bangalore, and select DRDO institutes. Open-source control frameworks and kinematic datasets will be published quarterly to support India’s broader robotics ecosystem. Industry partners including Tata Advanced Systems and L&T Technology Services will provide manufacturing validation and supply chain support.
The initiative aligns with the Indian government’s National Robotics Mission, which targets localized manufacturing of advanced automation hardware. Pilot production of the actuator series is scheduled to begin at DRDO’s certified fabrication units in Q2 2025, with validation trials planned across three industrial partner sites in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The lab’s leadership has confirmed that full operational capacity will be reached by late 2026, positioning India as a competitive player in the global humanoid robotics supply chain.
