IIT Madras and NeuroBotics Labs Unveil Astra Humanoid Research Platform - RobotWale News

New Modular Humanoid Platform Launched for Academic Research

On October 12, 2024, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, in partnership with Bangalore-based NeuroBotics Labs, officially unveiled the Astra Humanoid Research Platform. The launch marks a significant milestone in India’s domestic humanoid robotics ecosystem, providing researchers with a fully open-source, modular bipedal robot designed specifically for academic and industrial laboratory environments. The platform was developed over an 18-month period under IIT Madras’s Robotics and Automation Lab, with hardware integration and control system validation handled by NeuroBotics Labs. The announcement coincides with the conclusion of a three-year government-funded grant aimed at accelerating indigenous humanoid development.

Indigenous Design and Technical Specifications

Astra features a 28-degree-of-freedom articulated structure, weighing 42 kilograms with a payload capacity of 8 kilograms. The robot utilizes custom-designed series elastic actuators, all manufactured within India, reducing reliance on imported joint modules. Powered by a distributed computing architecture, Astra runs on a Linux-based ROS 2 middleware stack, with integrated 3D vision sensors and force-torque feedback in both wrists. The system supports real-time reinforcement learning algorithms for dynamic balance and adaptive locomotion across varied terrain types. NeuroBotics Labs has also released a comprehensive software development kit, enabling universities to modify kinematic models and train manipulation policies without proprietary restrictions. Battery life is rated at four hours of continuous operation, with hot-swappable power packs supporting extended lab sessions.

India Focus and Research Applications

Pricing for the Astra platform has been set at ₹18.5 lakhs for academic licenses, with a 15% discount available for government-funded institutions. This positioning aims to lower the barrier to entry for Indian universities and research centers that previously faced costs exceeding ₹40 lakhs for comparable foreign humanoid systems. IIT Madras will host the first deployment, allocating 12 units to its advanced robotics programs, while NeuroBotics Labs plans to distribute 50 additional units across IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, and select state engineering colleges by early 2025. The platform will primarily support research in human-robot interaction, compliant control systems, and low-cost automation for manufacturing and healthcare sectors. Industry partners have already expressed interest in piloting Astra for warehouse logistics and assistive technology trials in rural Indian communities, with the first commercial pilot scheduled for Q2 2025.
