India's First Indigenous Humanoid Robot Aatman-1 Unveiled for SME Manufacturing - RobotWale News

Aatman-1 Humanoid Robot Unveiled by Indian Consortium

Indian robotics startup Vajra Dynamics, in strategic partnership with the Advanced Robotics Laboratory at IIT Bombay, has officially unveiled Aatman-1, the nation's first fully indigenous humanoid robot engineered for high-precision manufacturing tasks. The unveiling ceremony held in Bengaluru on October 26, 2024, underscores India's growing capability in designing and fabricating complex humanoid systems domestically. The robot is tailored to assist small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in overcoming labor shortages and improving operational efficiency in electronics and automotive assembly lines.

Aggressive Pricing and SME-Focused Business Model

Aatman-1 is priced at ₹15 lakhs per unit, a fraction of the cost of comparable imported humanoid robots which typically range between ₹80 lakhs and ₹1.5 crore. To accelerate adoption, Vajra Dynamics has launched a 'Robot-as-a-Service' model with monthly leases starting at ₹75,000. The company aims to deploy 500 units within the first year, focusing on industrial clusters in Pune, Chennai, and the National Capital Region. Local assembly is planned at a facility in Tamil Nadu to qualify for production-linked incentives under the government's robotics scheme.

Technical Specifications and Indigenous Components

The Aatman-1 humanoid stands 1.7 meters tall with a weight of 45 kilograms. It boasts 28 degrees of freedom, enabling agile movement and manipulation. The upper body features a custom-designed parallel gripper with 50 Newton force feedback, allowing for the handling of sensitive electronic components. Key hardware components, including harmonic drives and custom silicon-based controllers, are sourced from Indian suppliers, ensuring high import substitution. The robot runs on a real-time operating system developed by IIT Bombay, processing data from a 3D depth camera array and ultrasonic sensors to navigate dynamic factory floors.

Pilot Deployments and Industry Adoption

Vajra Dynamics has secured commitments for pilot trials with three leading Tier-1 automotive suppliers in Maharashtra. These pilots will test Aatman-1 in quality inspection and bin-picking applications over the next four months. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has recognized the project as a priority initiative, providing technical grants and regulatory fast-tracking. Vajra Dynamics plans to release an open-source software development kit in early 2025 to foster a developer ecosystem around the platform.
