Robotics Sector Gains Momentum at India Robotics Expo 2024

BANGALORE - The robotics sector in India took a significant stride forward this week as the India Robotics & Automation Expo 2024 concluded in Bangalore. The event, held at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) from October 10 to October 12, showcased over 50 international and domestic startups competing for attention.

Focus on Affordability and Local Manufacturing

A standout moment occurred during the keynote session where a consortium of Indian startups unveiled a new prototype humanoid robot designed specifically for manufacturing and logistics sectors. Unlike global counterparts that often exceed $50,000, this prototype aims to bring the price point down to approximately ₹15 lakhs for early adopters. This pricing strategy aligns with the broader goal of making automation accessible to Indian MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises).

Industry leaders emphasized that making humanoid robots affordable is crucial for the country's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The prototype features a lithium-ion battery pack capable of 8 hours of continuous operation, addressing power infrastructure challenges in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. It also incorporates a dual-arm system designed for delicate assembly tasks, moving beyond heavy industrial lifting.

Government Support and Market Potential

Officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) were present, highlighting new grants available for robotics R&D. The expo recorded over 10,000 footfalls, including major automotive manufacturers looking to integrate automation into their assembly lines. The presence of global players like Boston Dynamics and Tesla representatives, albeit in partnership discussions, added weight to the event.

Analysts suggest that the pricing strategy adopted at this expo could redefine the market landscape. If the prototype transitions from concept to mass production by late 2025, it could capture a significant share of the South Asian robotics market. The government has pledged to offer tax incentives for companies setting up local assembly units.

The event also featured workshops on AI integration and safety protocols, ensuring that local manufacturers are equipped with the necessary technical know-how. As the expo closed, organizers announced plans to expand the footprint to Delhi and Mumbai in the coming year. The consensus among attendees was that India is poised to become a key manufacturing hub for cost-effective robotics solutions in the coming decade.
