India Robotics Week 2024 Concludes with Major Humanoid Launch
Bengaluru, India – The India Robotics Week 2024 concluded on Saturday at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC), marking a significant milestone for the nation’s automation sector. The three-day event, attended by over 15,000 industry professionals and students, highlighted the rapid advancement of indigenous robotics technology, with a particular focus on humanoid applications designed for the Indian market.
Unveiling the 'Astra' Humanoid Robot
Leading the charge was Bengaluru-based startup RoboTech India, which unveiled its latest product, the ‘Astra’ humanoid robot, during the opening ceremony. Designed primarily for manufacturing and logistics, the Astra features a dual-arm manipulation system and advanced AI navigation capabilities. The robot is capable of lifting loads up to 15 kilograms and operates for eight hours on a single charge. Unlike many global competitors priced over $50,000, the Astra is priced at ₹18.5 lakhs ($22,000), making it accessible for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in India.
Dr. Rajesh Kumar, CEO of RoboTech India, stated during the press conference, “Our goal is to democratize robotics in India. The Astra is built to handle repetitive tasks in warehouses and assembly lines, directly addressing the labor shortage we face in the manufacturing sector.”
Industry Impact and Future Outlook
The expo also featured demonstrations of agricultural robots and collaborative arms from other major exhibitors, including Bosch and Tata Motors. The Indian government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme was cited as a key driver for this innovation surge. With pre-orders already exceeding 500 units, the Astra is expected to begin deliveries in Q3 2024.
RoboTech India also announced a strategic partnership with a Chennai-based auto component manufacturer to integrate the Astra into their production lines immediately. Analysts suggest that the pricing strategy positions Indian startups to compete not just domestically but also in emerging markets across Southeast Asia and Africa.
The event concluded with a panel discussion on the regulatory framework for humanoid robots in India, setting the stage for future policy developments. Organizers announced that the next edition will expand to include a dedicated space for consumer-facing service robots. Security concerns were also addressed, with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) representatives present to discuss safety standards for autonomous systems. The consensus among industry leaders was that India is poised to become a global hub for cost-effective robotics solutions.
