Indian Startup AstraBots Unveils Vayu-1 Humanoid for Logistics and Manufacturing - RobotWale News

Domestic Humanoid Launch Targets Indian Industrial Sector

On November 12, 2024, Bangalore-based robotics startup AstraBots officially unveiled Vayu-1, a fully operational humanoid robot engineered specifically for Indian logistics and small-to-medium enterprise (SME) manufacturing environments. The company announced that Vayu-1 will begin commercial deployments in Q1 2025, with initial pilot programs scheduled across warehousing hubs in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.

Technical Specifications and Pricing

Vayu-1 stands at 1.7 meters tall and weighs 65 kilograms, powered by a custom silicon-based control system and a 48V lithium-ion battery pack that delivers up to eight hours of continuous operation. The robot features 28 degrees of freedom, enabling precise pick-and-place tasks, shelf restocking, and basic assembly line support. AstraBots has priced the base model at ₹18 lakhs (approximately $21,500), positioning it as one of the most affordable fully autonomous humanoids available in the Indian market. The pricing includes a three-year maintenance contract and on-site software updates.

India-Centric Development and Supply Chain

Unlike many imported humanoid platforms, Vayu-1 is designed with domestic manufacturing in mind. AstraBots partnered with local component suppliers to ensure that over 80% of the robot’s hardware, including actuators, sensors, and structural frames, is produced within India. This localization strategy aims to reduce import dependency, simplify spare part procurement, and align with the Indian government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes for advanced robotics.

Industry Implications

The launch comes as Indian logistics and manufacturing sectors face persistent labor shortages and rising wage costs. Industry analysts note that Vayu-1’s pricing and localized support network could accelerate humanoid adoption among cost-sensitive SMEs. AstraBots has also announced a training initiative with five Indian technical institutes to develop a workforce capable of programming and maintaining humanoid fleets. The company expects to deliver 200 units within the first year, with expansion into healthcare assistance and agricultural automation planned for 2026. Early adopters will receive integration support from AstraBots’ Chennai engineering center, ensuring seamless deployment alongside existing warehouse management systems.
