Bengaluru-based robotics firm Vajra Dynamics officially launched its first commercial humanoid robot, the VJ-1, on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone in India’s domestic automation landscape. The robot, designed specifically for factory floor operations and logistics handling, went live at a pilot facility in Tamil Nadu’s Hosur industrial belt. Vajra Dynamics announced that the VJ-1 will be priced at ₹42 lakh per unit, positioning it as one of the most affordable humanoid systems available in the Indian market. The pricing strategy deliberately undercuts imported alternatives by nearly forty percent, aiming to accelerate adoption among small and medium enterprises.
Technical Specifications and Industrial Applications
The VJ-1 features a 28-degree-of-freedom articulated body, dual manipulator arms with force-feedback sensors, and a 15-hour operational battery life. Equipped with a proprietary AI navigation stack developed in collaboration with IIT Madras, the robot can navigate complex warehouse environments, sort components, and assist in assembly line tasks. The system integrates seamlessly with existing enterprise resource planning software used across Indian manufacturing hubs. Early adopters include automotive parts suppliers and electronics assemblers in Gujarat and Maharashtra, who report a thirty percent reduction in repetitive manual labor hours during trial runs. The robot also supports multilingual voice commands in Hindi, Tamil, and English, facilitating easier operator training across regional factories.
Government Support and Market Expansion
The launch aligns with the Indian government’s Production Linked Incentive scheme for advanced robotics, which offers direct subsidies to domestic manufacturers adopting automation technologies. Vajra Dynamics plans to establish a final assembly line in Maharashtra by the third quarter of 2025, creating over two hundred engineering and technical jobs. The company secured ₹180 crore in Series B funding led by domestic venture capital firms earlier this year, which will be allocated toward scaling production capacity and expanding its sensor supply chain within India. The company has already secured pre-orders from three major Indian conglomerates and is targeting exports to Southeast Asia and the Middle East by late 2026. Industry analysts note that localized production will significantly lower import dependency and accelerate the deployment of humanoid robots across India’s expanding manufacturing sector.
