Vayu Robotics Launches Astra-1, India's First Cost-Effective Industrial Humanoid - RobotWale News
Launch Overview
On 15 May 2024, Mumbai-based robotics firm Vayu Robotics, incubated at IIT Madras Research Park, officially launched Astra-1, a bipedal humanoid robot designed for manufacturing and warehouse automation. The launch marks a significant milestone for India’s domestic humanoid robotics sector, which has historically relied on imported systems from Japan and South Korea. The company unveiled the prototype at a press conference in Chennai, demonstrating live navigation and assembly tasks in a simulated factory environment.
Technical Architecture and Capabilities
Astra-1 stands 1.7 meters tall and weighs 68 kilograms. It features a custom-designed hybrid actuation system combining brushless DC motors and series elastic actuators, enabling precise torque control and dynamic balance on uneven surfaces. The robot integrates a 12-core ARM processor running an open-source ROS 2 stack, alongside a 3D LiDAR and stereo vision suite for autonomous navigation. Vayu Robotics reports that Astra-1 can execute pick-and-place tasks at 1.2 meters per second, with a payload capacity of 15 kilograms. The unit also includes a force-torque sensor array in the wrists and ankles, allowing safe human-robot collaboration without physical barriers.
Pricing and Domestic Market Relevance
Priced at ₹18.5 lakhs ex-showroom, Astra-1 is positioned as a budget alternative to international models that typically cost between ₹80 lakhs and ₹2 crores. The company has partnered with three Tier-1 automotive suppliers in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra for pilot deployments starting June 2024. The Indian government’s Production Linked Incentive scheme for advanced electronics and robotics hardware has subsidized component sourcing, directly contributing to the reduced manufacturing cost. Industry analysts project that domestic humanoid robots could capture 12 percent of India’s industrial automation market by 2026.
Deployment Strategy and Export Ambitions
Vayu Robotics will initially focus on semiconductor packaging, electronics assembly, and material handling sectors. The firm plans to open a 50,000 square foot assembly facility in Chennai by Q4 2024, aiming for a monthly production capacity of 200 units. CEO Arjun Mehta stated that the company is in advanced negotiations with distributors in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, with export shipments scheduled for early 2025. The launch underscores India’s growing capacity in high-end robotics hardware and aligns with national goals to reduce dependence on foreign automation technology.
