Vayu Robotics Unveils Astra-1 Humanoid for Indian Manufacturing - RobotWale News

Vayu Robotics Launches Astra-1 Humanoid for Industrial Automation

Bengaluru-based Vayu Robotics officially unveiled the Astra-1 humanoid robot on October 24, 2024, marking a significant step toward affordable automation in India’s manufacturing sector. The company positioned the Astra-1 as a purpose-built assistant for factory floors, warehouses, and logistics hubs, specifically engineered to address labor shortages and rising operational costs across Indian SMEs.

Technical Specifications and Capabilities

The Astra-1 stands at 175 centimeters tall and weighs 68 kilograms, powered by a custom silicon-based control board and a suite of proprietary tactile sensors. The robot features a 27-degree-of-freedom articulation system, enabling precise object manipulation, stair navigation, and dynamic balance in unstructured environments. Its onboard AI stack runs a locally hosted inference engine, allowing real-time decision-making without continuous cloud dependency. Vayu Robotics demonstrated the Astra-1 successfully sorting mixed SKUs, operating industrial machinery, and collaborating alongside human workers in a live factory simulation.

Pricing and India Market Relevance

Addressing the historical barrier of high entry costs for humanoid automation, Vayu Robotics announced a base configuration priced at ₹18.5 lakhs for the Indian market. This tier includes standard grippers, a 12-hour battery pack, and a three-year maintenance contract. A premium fleet edition, priced at ₹24 lakhs, adds LiDAR mapping, advanced collision avoidance, and integrated ERP connectivity. The company plans to begin pilot deployments in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra by Q1 2025, with mass production scaling at its newly commissioned facility in Hosur.

Industry Outlook and Availability

The launch positions Vayu Robotics alongside global humanoid manufacturers, but with a distinct focus on localized software training, monsoon-hardened chassis sealing, and compliance with India’s robotic safety guidelines. Pre-orders are now open through the company’s B2B portal, with delivery timelines starting in February 2025. Vayu Robotics has also partnered with two Indian engineering colleges to develop certification programs for humanoid robot operators, aiming to bridge the technical skills gap in the domestic workforce.
