Veda-1 Launches for Domestic Industrial Automation

On 12 October 2024, Bangalore-based robotics startup Bharat Robotics officially unveiled the Veda-1, a fully autonomous humanoid robot engineered specifically for India’s manufacturing and logistics sectors. The launch marks the first domestically developed bipedal humanoid to enter mass production in the country, with initial shipments scheduled for Q1 2025. The robot was developed over three years by a team of engineers from IIT Madras and former DRDO researchers, focusing on high-torque actuators and vision-based navigation tailored for Indian factory floors.

Technical Specifications and Pricing

The Veda-1 stands at 1.7 meters tall and weighs 68 kilograms, equipped with a 48V battery system offering up to eight hours of continuous operation. It features 28 degrees of freedom, dual 4K depth-sensing cameras, and a custom-built reinforcement learning model trained on localized warehouse layouts. The unit is priced at ₹12.5 lakh (approximately $15,000), a fraction of the cost of comparable Western and Japanese humanoid platforms. Bharat Robotics has confirmed that the pricing excludes optional end-effectors and fleet management software, which will be sold separately. Government incentives under the PLI scheme for advanced manufacturing robotics are expected to further reduce the effective cost for domestic buyers.

Market Impact and Future Roadmap

The introduction of the Veda-1 directly addresses India’s growing demand for affordable automation amid rising labor costs and supply chain complexities. Early adopters include three major automotive component manufacturers in Tamil Nadu and a national e-commerce logistics hub in Karnataka. Bharat Robotics has partnered with local system integrators to provide installation, calibration, and maintenance services across tier-1 and tier-2 industrial cities. The company plans to release a collaborative variant, the Veda-1C, by mid-2025, featuring force-torque feedback for safe human-robot interaction. With the Indian humanoid robotics market projected to exceed ₹4,000 crore by 2028, the Veda-1 launch positions Bharat Robotics as a key domestic alternative to imported automation solutions.
