IIT Madras and Agilicious Announce Joint Humanoid Actuation Research Lab

IIT Madras and Agilicious have officially launched the Centre for High-Torque Density Actuators (CHTDA), a dedicated research facility aimed at solving the cost and performance bottlenecks in humanoid robot manufacturing. Announced on October 24, 2024, the collaboration leverages IIT Madras' expertise in electromechanical design and Agilicious's commercialization capabilities to develop next-generation actuation modules tailored for the Indian robotics market.

The new lab will focus primarily on optimizing harmonic drive gears and developing high-precision torque sensors indigenous to India. Current humanoid robots rely heavily on imported components, which constitute nearly 60% of the total hardware cost. The CHTDA project aims to reduce the bill of materials (BOM) for critical joint modules by 40% through localized manufacturing processes and advanced composite materials. Researchers will utilize AI-driven simulation tools to optimize gear tooth profiles, aiming to achieve a torque density of 50 Nm/kg in the prototype phase by Q2 2025.

Research Objectives and Cost Reduction Targets

A core mandate of the joint lab is the creation of an open-reference design for a 7-degree-of-freedom humanoid arm actuator. The team plans to release initial CAD models and firmware stacks to the developer community by December 2024. This initiative is expected to significantly lower the entry barrier for Indian startups and academic labs working on humanoid platforms. The targeted retail price for the reference actuator module is set below ₹45,000, a substantial reduction from the current market rate of ₹75,000 to ₹1,20,000 for comparable imported units.

Implications for Indian Robotics Ecosystem

The launch aligns with the Indian government's push for semiconductor and robotics self-reliance under the Make in India 2.0 initiative. Agilicious CEO Ramesh Krishnan stated that the lab will prioritize partnerships with local MSMEs for component fabrication, fostering a domestic supply chain for humanoid robotics. The research output will also feed into a new curriculum for robotics engineering at IIT Madras, with plans to train 500 engineers in humanoid actuation systems over the next two years.

The CHTDA lab will operate with an initial seed funding of ₹5 Crore, contributed equally by the institute and the startup. Prototype testing is scheduled to begin in early 2025, with validation trials planned at Agilicious's pilot manufacturing facility in Bengaluru. This development marks a strategic shift from assembly-based robotics to core component innovation within India's humanoid sector.
