IIT Madras and Agility Robotics have officially launched the Joint Humanoid Locomotion Research Lab (JHLRL) in Chennai. The facility, inaugurated on November 12, 2024, will focus on dynamic bipedal gait optimization, terrain adaptation, and next-generation actuator systems for commercial humanoid platforms. The partnership formalizes a three-year research agreement aimed at accelerating open-source locomotion algorithms and hardware standardization.
Research Focus and Indian Relevance
The lab will prioritize open-source simulation frameworks and real-world deployment trials tailored to India’s manufacturing and logistics sectors. Initial research will leverage IIT Madras’ advanced robotics workshops alongside Agility’s latest development hardware. To support domestic academic participation, the institutions have structured a subsidized hardware kit program priced at ₹18.5 lakhs per university, significantly reducing the barrier to entry compared to the standard $220,000 global rate. The facility will also host a dedicated data center optimized for high-fidelity physics simulations running on domestically sourced GPU clusters.
Technical Roadmap and Industry Impact
Researchers will concentrate on torque-controlled joint modules, energy-efficient power management, and vision-guided navigation for unstructured environments. The collaboration will integrate Indian semiconductor manufacturing capabilities for custom motor driver fabrication, reducing dependency on imported microcontrollers. Quarterly technical symposia will bring together researchers from India’s automotive, aerospace, and electronics sectors to test humanoid mobility in factory-floor simulations.
All non-proprietary control algorithms and simulation datasets will be published under an open academic license. Pilot deployments across Indian industrial parks are scheduled for mid-2025, with the lab aiming to certify 50+ robotics engineers through specialized humanoid motion control courses by the end of 2026.
Infrastructure and Funding Commitment
The JHLRL occupies a 4,500-square-foot dedicated space within IIT Madras’ robotics corridor, featuring high-load testing rigs, motion-capture arrays, and modular assembly stations. Initial funding totals ₹12 crores, split between Indian government research grants and Agility Robotics’ technology licensing division. The lab will operate on a shared-IP model, allowing participating universities to commercialize derivatives while maintaining core locomotion patents under joint stewardship.
