Bengaluru Hosts Largest Humanoid Robotics Gathering
The India Humanoid Robot Summit 2024 concluded yesterday in Bengaluru, marking a significant milestone for the country's automation sector. Over 5,000 attendees gathered at the BEML Grounds to witness live demonstrations of next-generation humanoid robots. The event ran for three days and featured over 50 booths showcasing cutting-edge AI and mechanical engineering solutions.
Keynote speakers included executives from leading global robotics firms and Indian startups. A major highlight was the unveiling of the "Bharat Bot-1" by the indigenous startup, OmniIndic Robotics. Priced at ₹45 lakhs, the robot is designed specifically for Indian industrial environments, offering a cost-effective alternative to imported models which typically cost over ₹1.5 crores. It features a battery life of 12 hours and supports multi-lingual voice commands.
Strategic partnerships were announced during the event. OmniIndic Robotics signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tata Motors to deploy 50 units for pilot testing in their Pune facilities. This collaboration aims to integrate humanoid robots into assembly lines for heavy lifting and precision tasks. The deployment is expected to begin in Q3 2025, with full-scale operations targeted for early 2026.
Global players also made their presence felt. Representatives from Boston Dynamics confirmed their interest in the Indian market, though no official launch date was provided. They showcased their latest Atlas prototype, emphasizing safety features tailored for shared human-robot workspaces. Several other prototypes from Chinese manufacturers were also displayed, highlighting the competitive global landscape.
The event also saw the launch of the 'National Robotics Taskforce' by the Ministry of Heavy Industries. The taskforce aims to provide subsidies up to 30% for the procurement of approved humanoid robots in MSME sectors. This initiative is expected to accelerate the adoption rate across India's manufacturing belt, making automation accessible to smaller enterprises.
Dr. Ravi Sharma, Director of the India Robotics Society, stated that the summit successfully bridged the gap between academic research and commercial application. He noted that pricing remains the biggest barrier, but local manufacturing is rapidly reducing costs. The summit concluded with a call to action for policymakers to streamline import duties.
Experts believe that with the new subsidies and the successful demonstrations witnessed in Bengaluru, India could become a regional hub for humanoid robot deployment by 2026. The next summit is scheduled to be held in New Delhi, focusing on healthcare robotics applications and elderly care solutions.
