NexRobotics Unveils Indra-1 Humanoid Robot for Indian Manufacturing Sector - RobotWale News

First Public Demonstration and Launch Details

On October 12, 2024, Bengaluru-based robotics startup NexRobotics officially launched the Indra-1 humanoid robot at a press event in Chennai. The company demonstrated the unit performing pick-and-place operations, stair navigation, and manual tool handling in a simulated warehouse environment. The Indra-1 stands at 175 centimeters, weighs 62 kilograms, and features a custom silicon-based motor system developed in partnership with a Hyderabad-based actuator firm. Each joint utilizes high-torque density actuators rated for 5,000 hours of continuous operation, while the central processing unit runs on an indigenous Linux-based real-time kernel optimized for low-latency control loops.

Pricing and Domestic Manufacturing Strategy

NexRobotics priced the Indra-1 at ₹18 lakhs for domestic buyers, positioning it as an accessible automation solution for small and medium enterprises across India. The company plans to assemble 70 percent of the robot’s components within India over the next eighteen months, utilizing government incentives under the Production Linked Incentive scheme for advanced hardware. Initial production will occur at a new facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, with plans to scale to 500 units annually by mid-2025. The base model includes a 40 amp-hour lithium-titanate battery pack, delivering up to six hours of active duty cycle time. A domestic charging dock compatible with standard Indian electrical grids will be included in the base package.

Industry Partnerships and Deployment Timeline

The launch follows a signed memorandum of understanding with Mahindra & Mahindra’s automotive division and a mid-sized logistics provider in Pune. Both organizations will pilot the Indra-1 in quality inspection and material transfer tasks starting in January 2025. NexRobotics CEO Ananya Mehta stated that the unit’s open-source software stack allows Indian engineering colleges to integrate custom AI models for local language voice commands and regional navigation protocols. The company also announced a leasing program at ₹45,000 per month, aimed at reducing upfront capital expenditure for Indian manufacturers. With domestic humanoid robot demand projected to grow at 28 percent annually, NexRobotics aims to capture a significant share of India’s industrial automation market by leveraging locally developed hardware and software ecosystems. Regulatory approval from the Bureau of Indian Standards is currently under review to ensure compliance with workplace safety guidelines for collaborative robotics.
