Swami Robotics Unveils Swami 2.0 Humanoid

Swami Robotics, the humanoid robotics spin-off from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, has officially announced the commercial launch of its second-generation humanoid robot, Swami 2.0. The debut marks a pivotal moment for India's indigenous robotics ecosystem, targeting the manufacturing and logistics sectors with a focus on affordability and customization. The announcement was made earlier this week, outlining the robot's readiness for deployment in Indian industrial environments.

Technical Specifications and Swami OS

Swami 2.0 introduces a modular architecture designed to simplify maintenance and allow for rapid adaptation to different tasks. The robot features 22 degrees of freedom and a new generation of high-torque actuators, enabling complex manipulation and stable locomotion. It is equipped with a 360-degree stereo vision system and advanced force-torque sensors in the wrists, allowing for precise handling of fragile components and compliant control during assembly operations.

The unit runs on Swami OS, a custom operating system developed entirely in India. This software supports edge computing for real-time decision-making, ensuring data sovereignty by eliminating the need for cloud connectivity. This feature is particularly critical for sensitive manufacturing data in the automotive and pharmaceutical sectors. The robot offers a battery life of up to 8 hours on a single charge, supports payloads of 15 kg, and walks at speeds of 2 km/h.

Pricing and Strategic Pilots

In a move to democratize automation for Indian Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), Swami Robotics has priced Swami 2.0 at ₹45 lakhs (approximately $54,000). This pricing structure aims to lower the barrier to entry compared to international competitors. The company has initiated pilot programs with three automotive component manufacturers in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra to validate performance in shift-based production lines.

Dr. K. Madhava Krishna, CEO of Swami Robotics, emphasized the local focus: "Swami 2.0 is engineered for the Indian context. We have prioritized durability and the use of locally sourced components for repairs, alongside an intuitive interface that requires minimal technical training for local operators." The company has also partnered with academic institutions to develop training curricula for robotic maintenance technicians. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in Q1 2025, with pre-orders now open for the industrial variant.
