Vayu Robotics Launches Pragati-1 Humanoid for Industrial Automation

Indian humanoid robotics startup Vayu Robotics officially unveiled its first commercial humanoid robot, Pragati-1, on October 12, 2024, at a press event in Bengaluru. The company positioned the machine as a cost-competitive alternative to imported humanoids, specifically engineered for India’s logistics, warehousing, and discrete manufacturing sectors.

Technical Specifications and Pricing

Pragati-1 stands at 1.75 meters tall and weighs 68 kilograms, featuring a custom-designed series-elastic actuator system and a dual-arm configuration with 11 degrees of freedom per limb. The robot integrates a 48V high-torque motor network, a 3D LiDAR and stereo vision perception stack, and an edge-computing module running a proprietary motion planning OS. Vayu Robotics announced a starting price of ₹38 lakhs (approximately $45,600) for the base unit, with volume discounts available for fleet deployments exceeding ten units. The system includes a quick-change end-effector toolkit compatible with standard gripper and suction cup interfaces.

India Market Strategy and Deployment

To address supply chain dependencies, Vayu Robotics has partnered with three Tier-2 Indian component manufacturers to localize 70 percent of the robot’s hardware, including gearboxes, sensor housings, and wiring harnesses. The company plans to establish an assembly facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, by Q2 2025. Initial pilot deployments are scheduled with two major e-commerce logistics networks in the National Capital Region and a Pune-based automotive parts manufacturer. The robots will handle pallet stacking, bin picking, and quality inspection tasks in controlled warehouse environments.

The launch comes amid growing pressure on Indian manufacturers to automate repetitive handling tasks amid skilled labor shortages. Pragati-1 supports standard industrial communication protocols such as EtherCAT and OPC UA, allowing seamless integration with existing PLC and warehouse management systems. Vayu Robotics will offer a two-year warranty and remote diagnostics subscription, with service centers planned across Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad.

Industry analysts note that the ₹38 lakh price point positions Pragati-1 significantly below global competitors, which typically range between $80,000 and $120,000. Vayu Robotics founder Dr. Arjun Mehta stated that the company aims to ship 200 units in the first fiscal year, targeting heavy industries, electronics assembly lines, and last-mile distribution hubs. The firm also plans to open a robotics training academy in Gurugram to support operator certification and maintenance workflows.
