Astra Robotics Unveils Astra-1 Humanoid for Indian Manufacturing Sector - RobotWale News
Astra Robotics Launches Astra-1 Humanoid for Industrial Automation
Astra Robotics, a Bengaluru-based humanoid robotics startup, officially launched the Astra-1 humanoid robot on October 24, 2024. The company positioned the machine as a purpose-built solution for Indian manufacturing and logistics sectors, aiming to reduce reliance on expensive imported automation systems. Astra-1 features a 28-degree-of-freedom actuator system, a 360-degree LiDAR navigation suite, and an onboard AI module capable of real-time object recognition and adaptive gripping.
Design and Technical Specifications
The robot stands at 1.7 meters tall and weighs 68 kilograms. It utilizes a hybrid powertrain combining high-torque brushless DC motors with a 4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, enabling up to 12 hours of continuous operation. Astra Robotics integrated a proprietary motion-planning algorithm that allows the unit to navigate cluttered factory environments and execute precision pick-and-place tasks with ±0.5 millimeter accuracy. The system supports over-the-air updates and can be remotely monitored through a cloud-based dashboard.
India Market Positioning and Pricing
Priced at ₹45 lakhs (approximately $54,000), Astra-1 is positioned as a significantly more affordable alternative to European and American humanoid platforms. The startup has secured pre-orders from three major Indian automotive manufacturers and two logistics firms, with initial deployments slated for Q1 2025. Astra Robotics also announced a financing partnership with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to leverage India’s PLI scheme for robotics components.
Industry Response and Future Roadmap
Industry analysts note that the launch aligns with India’s push toward localized advanced manufacturing and semiconductor assembly capabilities. Astra Robotics plans to release an educational variant and a collaborative cobot version in 2026. The company will begin pilot installations at its partner facilities in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra by December 2024.
