Astra Robotics Unveils Vayu-1 Humanoid Robot for Indian Manufacturing - RobotWale News

Astra Robotics Launches Vayu-1 Humanoid Robot

Bengaluru-based Astra Robotics has officially unveiled Vayu-1, a 1.6-meter bipedal humanoid robot engineered specifically for India’s manufacturing and warehouse sectors. The announcement was made during the company’s product demonstration at the India Robotics & AI Summit in New Delhi this week. Vayu-1 features a custom-developed joint actuator system, a 20kg payload capacity, and an onboard AI navigation module optimized for unstructured Indian factory floors. The robot operates on a 60V lithium-ion battery pack that delivers up to eight hours of continuous operation on a single charge.

Designed for Indian Industrial Requirements

Unlike imported alternatives that often struggle with local infrastructure constraints, Vayu-1 incorporates a robust thermal management system and dust-resistant joints tailored for high-temperature environments. The robot utilizes a hybrid sensor suite combining solid-state LiDAR, stereo vision, and six-axis force-torque feedback to navigate tight aisles and handle delicate components. Astra Robotics has emphasized that the control architecture runs entirely on domestically developed firmware, reducing dependency on foreign software stacks and ensuring compliance with India’s data localization guidelines. The integration of a vernacular voice interface allows operators to issue commands in Hindi, Tamil, and Marathi.

Pricing and Commercial Availability

Astra Robotics has set the base price of Vayu-1 at ₹18.5 lakh, significantly undercutting imported competitors that typically range between $40,000 and $60,000. The company will begin pilot deployments with three mid-sized automotive parts manufacturers in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra next month. A leasing model starting at ₹45,000 per month is also available for small and medium enterprises seeking to automate repetitive picking and packing tasks. Vayu-1 is expected to enter full commercial production in Q3 2024, with a target output of 500 units annually. The startup has secured ₹120 crore in Series B funding from domestic venture firms to scale its supply chain and establish a dedicated assembly line in Karnataka.
