Series A Funding Secured for Domestic Humanoid Development

Bangalore-based robotics startup AstraBots announced the closing of a $15 million Series A funding round on October 24, 2024. The investment was led by Blume Ventures, with additional participation from SoftBank Robotics Fund and existing backers Matrix Partners India. The capital will be deployed to scale domestic manufacturing, expand research and development capabilities, and accelerate the commercial rollout of its next-generation humanoid platforms across South Asia.

Affordable Humanoid Platform Targets Indian Industries

Alongside the funding announcement, AstraBots unveiled the Astra H1, a bipedal humanoid robot designed specifically for industrial automation and logistics workflows. Priced at ₹28 lakhs per unit, the platform positions itself as one of the most cost-accessible humanoids in the Indian market. The robot features a 40-degree-of-freedom actuation system, dual 4K vision modules, and a modular end-effector interface compatible with standard factory tooling. Production is scheduled to begin in Q2 2025 at the company’s newly commissioned facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu.

Strategic Focus on Local Supply Chains and Workforce Integration

The startup has prioritized indigenous component sourcing to mitigate import dependencies and reduce long-term operational costs. Approximately 65 percent of the Astra H1’s hardware, including custom gearboxes, joint actuators, and control boards, is manufactured within India. AstraBots also announced a partnership with three major automotive component manufacturers and two e-commerce logistics firms to pilot the robot in assembly line assistance and warehouse inventory management tasks.

Industry analysts note that the pricing strategy directly addresses a critical barrier in India’s automation sector, where traditional robotic arms and collaborative robots often carry high upfront costs and complex integration requirements. By offering a modular, software-upgradable humanoid at a sub-$35,000 price point, AstraBots aims to lower the entry threshold for mid-sized enterprises seeking to adopt advanced automation without extensive retrofitting.

Market Expansion and Regulatory Alignment

The company plans to utilize the fresh capital to establish a dedicated safety certification lab and align its hardware with India’s upcoming Industrial Robotics Safety Guidelines. AstraBots will also launch a developer SDK in January 2025 to support third-party application development for healthcare, retail, and construction use cases. The startup is currently accepting pre-orders for pilot deployments across Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat, with delivery timelines set for mid-2025.
