Indian Institutions Launch Astra Humanoid Research Platform
On October 12, 2024, the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) and IIT Madras jointly announced the release of the Astra-1 Humanoid Research Platform, a fully open-source robotic framework designed for academic and industrial experimentation. The launch marks a strategic push to localize humanoid robotics development in India and reduce reliance on proprietary foreign hardware.
Technical Specifications and Research Focus
The Astra-1 platform features a 38-degree-of-freedom articulated structure powered by custom-designed brushless DC motors and high-torque actuators. The system integrates a distributed compute architecture built around NVIDIA Jetson Orin modules, enabling real-time sensor fusion, vision-based navigation, and adaptive locomotion algorithms. Researchers can access the complete CAD files, kinematic models, and reinforcement learning training datasets through a public GitHub repository.
Domestic Manufacturing and Pricing
Manufacturing will be coordinated through India’s MSME supply chain, with final assembly handled at C-DAC’s Bengaluru facility. The institutions have committed to a base unit price of ₹8.5 lakhs for academic labs and ₹12 lakhs for commercial research centers. Bulk procurement agreements for government-funded robotics initiatives will qualify for a 15 percent subsidy under the National Robotics Mission.
Industry Adoption and Future Roadmap
Early adopters include IIT Delhi, IIIT Hyderabad, and three private automation firms that have already signed development partnerships. The consortium plans to release firmware updates quarterly, with version 2.0 targeting dynamic bipedal running and advanced dexterous manipulation by mid-2025. The platform will also support ROS 2 Humble and NVIDIA Isaac Sim for simulation-to-real deployment pipelines.
According to Dr. Arjun Mehta, lead robotics engineer at IIT Madras, the initiative addresses a critical gap in India’s hardware ecosystem. Access to standardized, affordable humanoid platforms has historically been limited to well-funded overseas laboratories. Astra-1 provides domestic researchers with a transparent, scalable foundation for developing next-generation AI-driven robots.
The release aligns with India’s broader push toward indigenous AI and robotics capabilities. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has indicated that future grant allocations will prioritize institutions utilizing open hardware frameworks for defense, healthcare, and logistics applications.
