Technical Specifications and Open Architecture

The Astra-1 system features a fully articulated 36-degree-of-freedom frame, custom-designed harmonic drive actuators, and a distributed compute architecture powered by NVIDIA Jetson Orin modules. The platform integrates a modular sensor suite comprising 3D LiDAR, depth cameras, and tactile skin arrays, all managed through a real-time ROS 2 middleware stack. IIT Madras researchers have open-sourced the kinematic models, control algorithms, and hardware blueprints under the MIT License, enabling third-party developers to modify and scale the design without proprietary restrictions.

India-Focused Pricing and Accessibility

Recognizing the financial barriers typically associated with humanoid robotics development, the consortium has structured an academic licensing model priced at ₹14.5 lakhs per unit for domestic universities and research centers. Industrial partners and startups qualify for a ₹22 lakhs commercial research license, which includes priority access to firmware updates and technical support. The pricing strategy explicitly aims to lower the entry threshold for Indian startups and engineering colleges, positioning Astra-1 as a competitive alternative to imported research platforms that often exceed ₹1.2 crore per unit.

Research Applications and Future Roadmap

Initial deployments will focus on locomotion algorithms, adaptive balance control, and human-robot interaction in unstructured environments. The Chennai lab will host a six-month pilot program, inviting submissions from Indian technical institutes to test gait optimization and manipulation tasks. IIT Madras has announced plans to expand the Astra-1 ecosystem with modular end-effectors and cloud-based simulation environments by mid-2025. The consortium also plans to establish satellite research nodes in Bangalore, Pune, and Hyderabad to foster distributed collaboration across India’s robotics ecosystem.
