Bengaluru-based robotics startup AstraBots announced today the successful closure of a $12 million Series A funding round. The investment was led by Sequoia Capital India and Lightspeed India Partners, with participation from existing backers including AngelList and several prominent Indian angel investors. The capital will be allocated to mass production scaling, AI model training, and expanding the company’s manufacturing footprint in Karnataka.

Commercial Launch of Astra-1 Humanoid Platform

Alongside the funding announcement, AstraBots unveiled Astra-1, its first commercially viable humanoid robot designed specifically for Indian enterprise use cases. The 1.7-meter-tall platform features 28 degrees of freedom, dual 4K cameras, and a custom-built tactile sensor array optimized for warehouse sorting, inventory management, and last-mile delivery support. The robot operates on a modular software stack that integrates seamlessly with existing Indian ERP and warehouse management systems.

Pricing and India-Centric Deployment Strategy

AstraBots has positioned Astra-1 as a direct alternative to imported humanoid platforms, offering a base commercial lease starting at ₹18 lakhs (~$22,000) per unit. The pricing model includes full maintenance, over-the-air updates, and localized Hindi and English voice interfaces. The company has already signed deployment agreements with three major Indian logistics firms and two retail chains, with initial units scheduled for factory floor integration by Q2 2025.

Industry Impact and Manufacturing Expansion

The startup plans to open a 50,000-square-foot assembly facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, by early next year. This facility will produce 2,000 units annually and prioritize domestic component sourcing to reduce import dependency. Industry analysts note that Astra-1’s pricing and localized software architecture address a critical gap in India’s automation market, where foreign humanoid robots often exceed enterprise budgets by 300 percent. AstraBots will begin pilot deployments across Bengaluru and Chennai in January 2025, marking a significant step in India’s domestic humanoid robotics supply chain.
