Saanvi Robotics Launches Vayu-1 Humanoid for Domestic Industrial Use

Bengaluru-based deep-tech startup Saanvi Robotics officially unveiled its second-generation bipedal humanoid robot, Vayu-1, at the India Robotics Expo 2024 on October 12, 2024. The announcement marks a significant step in India’s domestic humanoid robotics ecosystem, as the company targets the country’s rapidly expanding logistics and healthcare sectors with a locally manufactured system.

Technical Specifications and Capabilities

The Vayu-1 stands at 1.65 meters tall and weighs 48 kilograms. It features a custom-designed actuator suite developed in collaboration with IIT Madras, enabling a maximum walking speed of 3.5 kilometers per hour and a payload capacity of 15 kilograms. The robot integrates a 32-core AI processing unit running on a modified ROS 2 architecture, allowing real-time environment mapping and autonomous navigation in unstructured indoor spaces. Its end-effectors are equipped with force-torque sensors calibrated for delicate object manipulation, making it suitable for pharmaceutical handling and patient assistance tasks.

Pricing and India Market Relevance

Saanvi Robotics has set the base price of the Vayu-1 at ₹32 lakhs, significantly lower than the ₹1.2 to ₹1.8 crore price points typically associated with imported humanoid platforms. The company plans to manufacture 80 percent of the components domestically, leveraging India’s growing semiconductor and precision engineering supply chains. Initial pilot deployments are scheduled for Q3 2024 across three major logistics hubs in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, alongside two private hospital networks in Karnataka and Delhi. Saanvi has also announced a leasing model starting at ₹4.5 lakhs per month to reduce upfront capital expenditure for Indian SMEs.

Industry Partnerships and Future Roadmap

The launch follows a strategic memorandum of understanding signed in August 2024 with Reliance Retail and Apollo Hospitals Group to co-develop task-specific software modules tailored for Indian operational environments. Saanvi Robotics CEO Arjun Mehta stated that the company aims to produce 500 units annually by 2026, with plans to expand into agricultural automation and eldercare support. The Indian government’s PLI scheme for advanced robotics has also been cited as a key enabler for the startup’s manufacturing scale-up.
